Ripping off Temps?
“It’s certainly clear that umbrella companies can be a big con for some workers”. The words of Labour MP, Iain Wright, summarise a disturbing reality that seems to haunt temps’ lives.
In fact, BBC has discovered that numerous temporary contract workers are losing thousands of pounds in wages because they are employed by umbrella companies.
That is because the contractor who requires the services of a temp hands the umbrella company the wage, and the umbrella company pays the worker minus the deductions. It appears, though, that some companies deduct not only what is mandatory (tax and workers’ national insurance contribution), but also the employers’ national insurance contribution and holiday pay. On top of that, workers seem to pay an administration fee plus VAT. Scotland was recently rocked by the case of umbrella companies that acted as subcontractors in a government project and reportedly charged employees so the latter could access their pay.
The bottom line is that it seems that umbrella firms take advantage of the fact that they advertise their services as beneficial for both employers and employees.
Employers find people fit for jobs they need to get done while getting rid of the payment headache, and temporary workers find jobs while enjoying some of the perks in permanent employment.
Naturally, a few rotten apples can’t spoil the whole bunch. There are good companies that act with transparency, clear contracts and trustworthiness, providing clear contracts that don’t exploit temps.
Processing pay and pensions is one of the services we provide, and, despite the fact that we are not an umbrella company, we felt the need to share with you that transparency is one of the pillars on which our services are based.
We enhance business growth through employee engagement, and trust is one of the most important elements that drive teams to excellence. Another equally important element is respect, which appears to be missing from some firms’ modus operandi in the case of temps.
Temporary workers are – in most cases, unintentionally – considered a group that is different from permanent employees in regards to what they deserve, aspire and expect from their job, despite the fact that temporary workers comprise a growing share of the workforce in dependent employment.
For us at Centralus, the key to any successful business, as well as the cornerstone of every fruitful partnership, has always been the human experience. Therefore, we designed solutions to increase engagement in the workplace for both temporary and permanent workers because every one of them is worth it.
Where others charge, we go complimentary.
Our employee engagement services do not discriminate.
The perks we offer are usually reserved for employees of multinational companies, but are offered equally to all workers of employers who entrust us, regardless of their status.
Our engaging experiences are life changing, in a positive sense.
- We stand by employers who value their workers.
- We help them attract the best, and retain them.
- We offer them the opportunity to thank their workers by offering them complimentary perks; creating a genuinely happy workforce, which inevitably reflects in their smiles everyday.
- We design tailor-made, transparent, top-notch services to make a difference. These services are designed for employers and workers who carve the workplace of tomorrow.
The workplace you’ve always dreamed of and deserve.
